The Second Day


Today started with a workshop on drama in teaching and continued with a walking tour through Dublin.

Here you can see some pictures along the way. We will finish at an Irish pub, the Cobblestones with some Irish music.

Wolfe Tone was an Irish republican who plotted an uprising against the British rule. The statue commemorates his heroism in the 18th century.

  Henrietta house When I travel, I find it fascinating to see what types of houses people live in and used to live in. Dublin boasts one of the best examples of Georgian houses and squares. (Georgian era in 1714-1837). If you want to find out about how people lived in Dublin, head for 14 Henrietta House on Henrietta Street. Henrietta House shows the 270 years of housing history in Dublin. Dublin was the second city of the British empire and a seat of learning and commerce in the 1700s. Henrietta Street was developed for wealthy and influencial families by a banker and politician. 14 Henrietta House was owned by one family at first, and the house was supposed to display their wealth.  The house has four storeys over the basement. The first floor was for entertainment.  Kitchens were in the basement. Servants’ quarters and nurseries were placed on the top. Assemblies, dinners and parties were held on regular basis.   Kouluvierailu Tänään oli vuorossa kouluvierailu Teresian tyttökouluun. Koulu oli pieni, jossa oppilaita aivan esikoulusta ylioppilaaksi saakka. Koulu on yksityinen katolinen koulu, jossa on koulumaksut. Ilmapiiri koulussa on lämmin ja opiskelijat tuntuivat viihtyvän koulussa. Tunneilla oli opiskelurauha. Koulun lämpimästä ilmapiiristä kertoi myös se, että oppilaat kutsuvat opettajia etunimellä, toisin kuin kouluissa yleensä. Saimme tutustua koulun rehtoriin ja vararehtoriin ja muutamaan opettajaan sekä seurata esim. kansalaistaidon, maantiedon ja historian tunteja. Koulussa käytetään koulupukuja, joihin kuuluu kiltti -hame, jonka värin saa itse valita, sekä pusero, jonka värin myös saa valita, kunhan alla on kauluspusero. Munkey puzzle tree Some facts about Ireland Gaelic Sports We learnt during our visit to the home of the Gaelic Athletic Association, Croke Park, that hurling is the oldest field sport and the 4th oldest sport in the world. Croke Park Stadium is the home of Gaelic sport and seats over 80 000 sports fans. Here is a video that gives you a glimpse of the atmosphere on the stadium:  Croke Park Stadium Dressing room, all the dressing rooms are the same size and have the same facilities no matter whether you are in the home team or the away team The stadium is ever so slightly curved from the middle so that water can drain away. No game needs to be cancelled because of rain.
